In an abrupt and sweeping move, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have announced they are cutting diplomatic relations and closing air, sea and land links with Qatar.

Triggering the Arab world’s biggest crisis in years, they accused the tiny Gulf state of harbouring extremist groups and suggested Qatar supported the agenda of Riyadh’s arch-rival, Iran.

In an unprecedented move, fellow Gulf states have closed all transport links with Qatar and ordered their citizens out of the country.

They have given Qataris abroad 14 days to return home.

The Saudi-US Summit (on May 20) will feature a series of bilateral meetings between King Salman and Trump, and “focus on re-affirming the long-standing friendship, and strengthening the close political, economic, security and cultural bonds between the two nations.” The GCC-US Summit (on May 21), held at the King Abdulaziz Convention Center in Riyadh, will see GCC leaders meet with Trump to discuss threats to regional security and stability and the building of stronger commercial ties between the US and the Gulf.
