By default when you connect an Exchange mailbox to Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2010 the ‘Use Cached Exchange Mode’ option is enabled.

The Outlook cached mode feature was designed to reduce network traffic between the Outlook clients and the Exchange server.

If you are not seeing correct contact information in the GAL for someone that has a valid email address (i.e.

someone who just received a CSUS email account, a new student, someone who recently changed their directory information) please use the steps below to synchronize your computer's locally cached version of the GAL.

We have created some distribution groups in Active Directory containing some users but as time goes on the users change.

The problem is that although we are updating the groups when we go to send from Outlook 2007 the groups are still the same as when they were first created and have not been updated with new users.

If not cached locally, the mail server keeps a file which contains all this data. This allows the user to access mail and contacts while not connected to the Exchange Server. If the checkbox is ticked, you are running in a cached mode. Of course, the following steps only apply to update a cached system. So if you are not cached, don’t bother following steps. Outlook will always download a copy of the Global Address List, however, it is only updated every 24 hours. After clicking OK, you will see a Send/Receive box appear, this updates your local data and then disappears once more. You have set up Outlook Photos and added photos as you require, however the photos are not appearing in Microsoft Outlook 2010.The Global Address List (GAL) has not updated from Active Directory.

The Global Address List (GAL) has not updated from Active Directory.

This will update contact information, pictures, phone numbers, etc. Now you have the most up-to-date information from Active Directory in your local address book. Under Send/Receive Groups, you should see an option to "Download Address Book." Now you will be prompted for a few options, and you can choose to update from the Global Address List (this is how your AD should push out contacts). I download the full address book and it loads for a couple of seconds. I open some contact which I haven't updated yet, click on update - it is updated.
